For those who want to dive more deeply into some of the subjects covered in How to Be Happy NOW, here are a few recommendations. More recommendations can be found on my Goodreads page–there are both fun, light spiritual reads and my all-time faves.
Spiritual Books – three of my favorites
The Kin of Ata Are Waiting for You, Dorothy Bryant
A feel-good novel about the spiritual transformation of a successful but wretched man. At the beginning of the book, he kills his girlfriend, gets in a car wreck and then wakes to find himself on the island of Ata. In Ata he undergoes, quite begrudgingly, a change by living with people who follow what is spiritually correct rather than a societal or mental idea of what is right. The book has a very magical feeling and has been a favorite among the people I have recommended it to.
Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda
The story of a young man looking for and finding his spiritual teacher, and then growing into a teacher in his own right. Considered a spiritual classic, it’s a good introduction to many spiritual concepts and has lots of fun stories of different teachers with supernatural powers he meets along the way to finding his real teacher.
Ramana Maharshi and the Path of Self-Knowledge, Arthur Osborne
The life and teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi, from the story of his awakening as a teenager when he asked himself “Who dies?” to his journey to and life at Arunachula, where he spent the rest of his years. Great stories with some of his devotees, his mother and with the animals of the ashram.
